Assessing Project Based Learning
Below you will find an introduction to this project. After the initial introduction there will be a download link for the entire project file including: Introduction, rubric, feedback form and remediation steps.
The reason I have hosted the file rather than post on here is simply because I lose all formatting when pasting and you can view, edit and adjust for your own needs if desired.
Introduction
Student Grade: Grade 11
Background Information:
Although the class is fairly computer literate, they have never had an ICT class before the beginning of this year. As such, they are fairly literate in their daily usage and understanding of computers however, there are holes in their basic knowledge and understanding. They are also ELLs meaning that part of the ICT classes overall objectives falls under language acquisition.
Due to the lack of previous classes and holes in their basic understanding/knowledge, the students are having these lessons as a foundation programme. The level is roughly equivalent to KS3.
Prior to this project they have been studying what it means to be a digital citizen and the importance, procedures and pitfalls of cyber security.
About the project:
Students have been studying, designing and started building a website with the goal of becoming a personal English blog/vlog. However, their goals will differ between them as it is their prerogative as to what their blog will focus on in terms of themes and topics.
The project will carry them through identifying their personal goals, gaining an understanding of the purpose and functionality of websites (in particular user interface and user experience).

**By analysing pre-existing examples of blogs, they can identify the consistent elements among them and understand what works and what doesn’t. They can begin critically analysing “why?”. After getting a better understanding, they can bring those elements into their own designs.
This will arm them with the fundamental knowledge needed to design and build their own website to meet their own personal project goals.
They will use Wix to build a website as it has a Graphical User Interface (GUI) on their site for building. This makes it easier to use and build as the focus is on functionality and design.
**Wix’s GUI builder makes it simpler and easier for students to focus on the design and functionality elements more that the coding elements of web building, making it an easier and more suitable introduction to web design than software such as Dreamweaver.
Background operations using HTML, CSS and more complex software would come in a higher level of classes. They can use these elements if they already have pre-existing knowledge.
Upon completion, or near-completion would lead them to peer-review and website revisions before finally completing the project with a self-reflection on their performance and website.
The overall learning objectives are as follows:
To be able to understand the relationship between a website's purpose and the design elements in relation to the user experience.
Create their own project objectives with the end users in mind.
Be able to carry out the project through conception, planning and implementation.
Be able to critique design, usability and accessibility of sample sites, their own and peers.
Understand how design and functionality affects the usability of a site and its success.
Test a website for functionality, display and accessibility before publishing to the internet.
Be able to peer-review and critically think whether the changes are suitable, and implement suggested changes if beneficial.
To assist in developing 21st century skills to support them as the enter the workplace.
